pH 的 p

前兩天 cation 來電與我討論 pH 的 p 到底是什麼意思，而昨天下午直屬主管剛好也注意到某些文件與報告中 pH 的 p 的大小寫問題…

我的理化啟蒙老師教過， p 是取負的常用對數值的意思，而當 p 代表「取負的常用對數值」的意思時，是要小寫的。我相信這對 cation 與直屬主管亦不構成問題，但我們之所以又會將 pH 的 p 提出來討論，實在是因為電腦普及化的結果。無論你是用 Word 或 Excel 或其他的文書處理軟體，如果設定了句首大寫，那當你打了 pH 而又按了 Enter 鍵，pH 的 p 就會自動變成大寫了。而當大寫的 P 在別人的報告裡出現頻率愈來愈高之後，久而久之我們都會開始感到疑惑，是…怎麼了？規則改了嗎？

花了點時間閱讀 Wikipedia 的 pH 說明，然後又由其下之參考文獻連結到最早提出 pH 概念的丹麥化學家 Søren Peter Lauritz Sørensen 的介紹，兩邊的內容都很精采。

附註（這一段很重要）：
In Sørensen 's original paper, pH is written as PH. According to the Compact Oxford English Dictionary, the modern notation "pH" was first adopted in 1920 by W. M. Clark (inventor of the Clark oxygen electrode) for typographical convenience. "p-Functions" have also been adopted for other concentrations and concentration-related numbers. For example, "pCa = 5.0" means a concentration of calcium ions equal to 10^-5 M, and pKa = 4.0 means an acid dissociation constant equal to 10^-4.

The acid potential of aqueous solutions is measured in terms of the pH scale. The symbol "p" means take the negative logarithm of whatever follows in the formula. for pH, pOH, p[anything].

The p" factor" is defined as the log of the whatever quantity that follows the symbol. The "p" is an operator. It communicates the instruction to calculate the negative log of any quantity that follows the symbol.

我自己也有許多改不過來的壞習慣，像現在我還是會把秒的單位 s 寫成 sec 而把小時的單位 h 寫成 hr 咧…
