Before landing here, I asked a few budget questions on IndiaMike (very useful forum for either backpackers or for people who want to live in India for some time.) since I have to manage my life well due to limited salary. Thanks for a few folks' replies. According to their suggestions and my own experience, hopefully the following list can give you some snapshots about $$.
- Preliminary
Place: Chennai, India
Currency: INR (India Rupees)
Memo: I'm a female... but I eat a lot..(sometimes) :p
- DRINK/WATER
Tea(chai) 3-5 from roadside stall
A bottle of mineral water 1L: 12
A coke (can) 20-25
A beer 75 (650ml kingfisher)
- FOOD
A breakfast local (bread omelet, toast, dosa or idly) 10-15
It depends on what kind of restaurant/hotel you go.
If in small local restaurant (most of them offer VEG/NON-VEG choice), a regular VEG MEAL (Indian food lunch/dinner) costs 25-30, NON-VEG is much costly (chicken/prawn/fish), more than 50.
If it's 3 star, price will be around 300+ (fixed menu)
4 star might be 500+
5 star 700+
Fried chicken (MarryBrown) 39 for a small piece
A fixed menu (1 burger, 1 coke, 1 french fries) would cost 100
My regular dinning out places (offer decent sizzler or good pasta or any kinds of continental food) would cost around 150~350
- ACCOMMODATION
Guest house (shared by 3-4 people) equipped with kitchen, 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, 1 living room, no A/C but FAN would be 10,000/month. For everyone it is around 2500~3000 per month plus electricity, water and maintenance fee.
- COMMUNICATION
Internet access 20-25/hr or 50/1.5hr (RelianceWebWord) or 50/2hr (iWay). Some places provide webcam/netphone facility but it always depends. Reliance WebWorld and iWay are chain stores, some netcafe are privately owned.
Mobile (prepaid SIM card): Pay 99+ to get a new number (Airtel or Hutch). Recharge card costs around 100+ (every month I spend around 350 to keep my cellphone alive..)
ISD (international telephone booth) is everywhere but the rate is relatively high compared to netphone (Skype or Yahoo voice chat.) A Call from India to Taiwan Taipei might cost 15~25 per min. A meter will print the bill after you finish.
- TRANSPORTATION
rickshaw: prices depends on distance and how you bargain. Better to ask people who travel with auto regularly about the price and bargain with 5 or 10 rupee less with driver. 8 ropes per kilometer can be applied but would be much costly.
Train tickets: depends on distance and class. You might get detail info (time schedule as well as price) on IRCTC
Anything else?

Hi Diane,
Your website no doubt looks good. But I have one problem. You are Not supposed to scan Indian Currencies as per Indian Law. As there are a lot of people trying to imitate Indian currencies especially people and terrorists from Pakistan. So it would be nice if you remove these currencies that are scanned from your website
You can remove the previous addition to your Blogs on the Commenst which says "You are supposed to scan Indian Currencies as per Indian Law". Sorry for the trouble.
In case u want to speak about India if you dont mention abject poverty as thats what the wesyern Media likes to talk about India and not the goodies in India. Please be proud of Your country and also at the same time Take Good Positive signs about OUR COUNTRY which we proudly call INDIA
Thanks
