Chai ya? Suggest one!

By Diane at 2004-12-03 01:45 AM

I'm collecting a to-buy list, especially a list for tea.

Assam, Darjeeling, Ceylon tea are must buys. Of course I can never miss the most important one -- masala tea. Some colleague suggested Taj Mahal (brand name) is better alghouth I have no ideas how to select among those brands unless I can smell it :Q

Suggestions are welcome.

Hi Diane,

At some shops u will get Everest Tea Masala which will cost about 20 to 35 rs depending on the amount u are buying. They are very good to have and are very close to masla chais. Although no tea brand will sell Masala Chai as such. In case u want good teas. U can always go in for Tata Tea for a Good aroma, taj Mahal for good long lasting tea fragrance although personally i love tata tea. Also tata Tea is the largest tea manufacturer in the world.

Mr. Indian That happens to my Pseudo name

I checked all the tea brands in FoodWord supermarket and found 2 ~ 3 brand names under Tata. Don't know whether they are good or not.. Also some other brands that are rarely heard.. (for me :Q) Is it good to buy tea in supermarket or I should get them from tea retailer shops?

My german friend said there's one restaurant who sells one German-brand indian tea (darjeeling). After I tried one cup, however, I didn't find it good enough.

Do I really have to go to Darjeeling to get real nice tea? (I don't think so...)

Hi Diane,

Naaaahhhhh. U dont have to go to Darjeeling To buy one. German Brand Indian tea. Its like Indian selling Sushi saying that he is the best at it.

Well back to ur problem. Yes Foodworld is a good entry point. In india we dont sell anything like a Darjeeling tea as such coz the best of Darjeeling tea is exported to other countries. Just in case u are hell bent on Darjeeling tea U can buy them at Chennai Duty Free. I had a friend from Finland who was staying with me in Chennai who bought the darjeeling tea at the Chennai International Duty free shop and he found it to be very Good. About Masala tea u can buy Everest Tea masala. They are pretty good. And trustworthy....

Also if u can tell me which brands of Tata Tea did u see at the market. I can tell which is good and which is not good. Ia m an avid driker of tea. Also there is this Sri Lankan brand which also execllent or if I may say Sexcellent....

I will soon open my identity to you.

Thats all for now.

Twinings!

Of course being English I have to plug this fine brand of tea, they are the people who pretty much dominated the India -> London tea routes, and built the fastest sailing ships in the world at the time just to ensure they could get the tea in before the competition! Still in business after 300 years, and apparently still in the same offices in London they do all sorts of teas. Here are some of my favourites:

- Earl Grey (more like a China tea, flavoured with Bergamot)

- Assam (of course... nice and strong)

- English Breakfast Tea (a little dissapointing in strength, but the image of white-suited colenels sipping this in the morning with their poached eggs and toast)

I also went to a factory in Sri Lanka called Glenloch, bought some very nice tea. Amlost run out though :-(

Apparently BOPF (Broken Orange Pekoe Finest) is the finest tea you can get as a leaf...
