The force that through the green fuse drives the flower的問題,實在是我們所形成最大的寬恕。

有Wendy Cope, Boris Pasternak, Marina Tsvetaeva, Dylan Thomas...

Dylan Thomas, Selected poems, edited with an introduction and notes by Walford Davies The force that through the green fuse drives the flower 註解.

The force that through the green fuse drives the flower ◎ Dylan Thomas

The force that through the green fuse drives the flower
Drives my green age; that blasts the roots of trees
Is my destroyer.
And I am dumb to tell the crooked rose
My youth is bent by the same wintry fever. 5

The force that drives the water through the rocks
Drives my red blood; that dries the mouthing streams
Turns mine to wax.
And I am dumb to mouth unto my veins
How at the mountain spring the same mouth sucks. 10

The hand that whirls the water in the pool
Stirs the quicksand; that ropes the blowing wind
Hauls my shroud sail.
And I am dumb to tell the hanging man
How of my clay is made the hangman's lime. 15

The lips of time leech to the fountain head;
Love drips and gathers, but the fallen blood
Shall calm her sores.
And I am dumb to tell a weather’s wind
How time has ticked a heaven round the stars. 20

And I am dumb to tell the lover's tomb
How at my sheet goes the same crooked worm.

The identification of the world’s elemental forces with those which govern the human body, so characteristic of Thomas’s poetry, is in itself clear enough. A greater difficulty would seem to lie in the repeated “And I am dumb to tell…”Thomas is possibly emphasizing the irony that, through physically man is one with the universe; he is separated from it by intellectual consciousness. In other words, the lament is not that he is dumb to tell, but that he can conceive of telling in the first place. In that sense, dumb to tell: also means “foolish to tell”.
1.2 BLASTS: not just” blows on”, but “explodes” (see ’fuse”, l.l).
1.4 CROOKED ROSE: along with the “crooked worm” of the poem’s final line, it suggests Blake’s The Sick Rose.
1.12 QUICKSAND: apart from the obvious meaning, there is possibly a reference to sand pouring quickly through an hour-glass, and a pun on “quick”=living.
1.14 The “hanging man”, being dead, is now genuinely one with the merely physical world to which the poet is dumb to tell.
l.15 HANGMAN’S LIME: the quicklime used to destroy the bodies of executed criminals buried in it.
l.16 THE FOUNTAIN HEAD: apart from the literal meaning, a metaphor for the womb from which time ”sucks ”the newly born.
l.20 The line suggests that, under the pressure of Time, man has invented Eternity— ticking a heaven round the stars, just as a clock’s hands, moving from hour to hour, ticks a perfect circle on the clock face.
1.22 Apart from the primary meaning of bedsheet and winding sheet, the “crooked
worm” is possibly also the poet’s finger moving on the “sheet” of paper on which the poem is written.

時間之唇蜎蜎擁向烝在的源頭;

Do not go gentle into that good night

Becquer, Lorca, Antonio Machado, Borges, Neruda, Ruben Dario, Juan Ramon Jimenez...

I will send you email soon.

In other words, the lament is not that he is dumb to tell, but that he can conceive of telling in the first place. In that sense, dumb to tell: also means “foolish to tell”.

1.12 QUICKSAND: apart from the obvious meaning, there is possibly a reference to sand pouring quickly through an hour-glass, and a pun on “quick”=living.

Hanging man 當然不是 hangman。
