F. Albert Cotton是W.T.Doherty-Welch基金傑出教授與德州農工的教授，1951—1955年在哈佛大學獲得博士學位，師從諾貝爾得主Geoffrey Wilkinson，37歲时當選美國國家科學院院士，畢生發表論文著作超過一千六百篇，也是唯一有史以来接受全部七项金獎(Baekeland、Kirkwood、Gibbs、Nichols、Richard、Pauling與Cotton)的美國化學家。Cotton以過渡金屬化學著名， 對於金屬錯合物鍵結的理解為日後的有機金屬與生物無機化學奠定了基礎。
Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe於一月二十七日在巴黎逝世。廣泛書寫過關於海德格、解構以及策蘭的著作。在《同如經驗的詩》(Poetry as Experience)一書闡述策蘭詩中受海德格哲學的影響，以及感受到海德格的納粹色彩，轉向人類與其變形的感知的風格。並以滅絕的沈寂(silence on the extermination)(Lacoue-Labarthe語)以及策蘭的反抗做為途徑來解構德國納粹主義。

江橋節郎，Setsuro Ebashi (1922–2006)於七月十七號逝世。在過去肌肉收縮的機制是在一九四零年代由Albert Szent-Györgyi完成，其接續後來的結構學與生物物理在Jean Hanson, Hugh Huxley, Andrew Huxley與R. Niedergerke完成。但最重要的倒是靠哪種媒介來將神經的訊息傳話給與肌肉知道，一直都是個謎。他的成就主要解決神經訊息如何傳遞到肌肉纖維而產生收縮，這個問題在他手中首要被解決。江橋發現鈣離子決定著肌肉收縮中蛋白質的作用，同時提出訊號是傳到肌肉細胞潛藏鈣離子的倉庫（sarcoplasmic reticulum）而放出鈣離子的假說，並以實驗證實整個機構。除了對於這個生理問題的解決，並啟發科學家不再忽略無機離子在生命代謝過程的重要性。

馬福茲(Naguib Mahfouz)一九八八年獲得諾貝爾文學獎，代表作有：家族小說“三街”(《宮間街》、《思宮街》、《甘露街》)和《道路》、《平民史詩》等 。六月在Al-ahram才刊出一篇西班牙訪談的短談錄，昨日因上個月跌傷，惡疾加重在醫院逝世。

拉赫曼(Shamsur Rahman)在達卡出生，達卡大學英語系畢業，多年來編輯國營日報，Dainik Bangla。他是孟加拉傑出的詩人，記者以及人權提倡者，九九年曾因伊斯蘭基本教義派入侵私宅與威脅存活下來。他的著作超過六十冊的詩集，部分曾翻譯為英文，包括去年出版的《拉赫曼最佳詩選》。 他的詩集多論述政治與社會正義，使他成為孟加拉自由中的象徵，同時為民眾所景仰、愛戴，如今至少五千名孟加拉民眾參與他的喪禮。

To the brother’s spotless shirt
His sister had sown
