Gloria

Jesus died for somebody's sins
but not mine…

That day the DJ on radio was talking about his music experience. He said that when he was a little kid, he was used to listen to his mom’s music collection when no parents were at home. Even so, he was getting tired of most of them because of the pop melody with flavourless lyrics. Until one day, he dusted off a record cover, took out a LP, and contacted the stylus with the vinyl record. When the first word came out, he knew immediately that his world has been changed. He was totally in awe that this kind of music existed. Then, that first word came out from the radio when I was driving in the dark…

Jesus died for somebody's sins
but not mine…

I suddenly got some goose pimples.
Not only because of the rebellious lyrics, but also the convincing voice which led you to the place where she was describing.
Now I know that is Patti Smith’s voice.

Gloria was the first song of Patti’s first album, Horses, released in 1975. I found an amateur live vision which was taped during the little concert for reissued “Horses” in 2005. Before singing the song, she shared some personal stories to encourage her audience to never give up. Because if you don’t open to the bad stuff, you’re not gonna notice the good stuff. It’s truly a pleasant to listen to her speaking.

Gloria
By Patti Smith from Horses, 1975

Jesus died for somebody's sins but not mine
meltin' in a pot of thieves
wild card up my sleeve
thick heart of stone
my sins my own
they belong to me, me

people say "beware!"
but I don't care
the words are just
rules and regulations to me, me

I-I walk in a room, you know I look so proud
I'm movin' in this here atmosphere, well, anything's allowed
and I go to this here party and I just get bored
until I look out the window, see a sweet young thing
humpin' on the parking meter, leanin' on the parking meter
oh, she looks so good, oh, she looks so fine
and I got this crazy feeling and then I'm gonna ah-ah make her mine
ooh I'll put my spell on her

here she comes
walkin' down the street
here she comes
comin' through my door
here she comes
crawlin' up my stair
here she comes
waltzin' through the hall
in a pretty red dress
and oh, she looks so good, oh, she looks so fine
and I got this crazy feeling that I'm gonna ah-ah make her mine

and then I hear this knockin' on my door
hear this knockin' on my door
and I look up into the big tower clock
and say, "oh my God here's midnight!"
and my baby is walkin' through the door
leanin' on my couch she whispers to me and I take the big plunge
and oh, she was so good and oh, she was so fine
and I'm gonna tell the world that I just ah-ah made her mine

and I said darling, tell me your name, she told me her name
she whispered to me, she told me her name
and her name is, and her name is, and her name is, and her name is G-L-O-R-I-A
G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria
G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria

I was at the stadium
There were twenty thousand girls called their names out to me
Marie and Ruth but to tell you the truth
I didn't hear them I didn't see
I let my eyes rise to the big tower clock
and I heard those bells chimin' in my heart
going ding dong ding dong ding dong ding dong.
ding dong ding dong ding dong ding dong
counting the time, then you came to my room
and you whispered to me and we took the big plunge
and oh. you were so good, oh, you were so fine
and I gotta tell the world that I make her mine make her mine
make her mine make her mine make her mine make her mine

G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria,
G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria

and the tower bells chime, "ding dong" they chime
they're singing, "Jesus died for somebody's sins but not mine."

Gloria G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria G-L-O-R-I-A,
Gloria G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria
G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria,
G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria,
G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria .

Hint

Om du var här
By Kent form Isola, 1997

Tid... du är dig inte lik
Min knutna hand i fickan
Sömn... jag kräver ingen sömn
Jag vrider mig på nålar

Om du var här
Om du var här
Om Jag var där
Om du var här
Idag, igår
Om du var här
Inuti & utanför
Om du var här
Idag, igår

Tid... allt ska bli som då
Jag nöjer mig med tystnad
Språk... jag behöver inget språk
med tiden på min sida

Om du var här
Om du var här
Om Jag var där
Om du var här
Idag, igår
Om du var här
Inuti & utanför
Om du var här
Idag, igår igen

Tid... & all min energi
slösar jag på nålar...

Om du var här
Om du var här
Om Jag var där
Om du var här
Idag, igår
Om du var här
Inuti & utanför
Om du var här
Idag, igår igen

If You Were Here"

Why people need to encounter with someone?
If the life of one is already good, why we feel more satisfied when there are two?

Because we need strength.

When there is someone, we are willing to keep going ahead even without confidence.
When there is someone, we are willing to keep breathing even if it hurts.
When there is someone, we are willing to keep fighting even if we’re terrified.
When there is someone, even if we’re exhausted, we still have some strength inside.

The strength is always stronger when it’s for others, not for self. It’s like that Goku becomes a Super Saiyan for protecting people who he loves.

On a street in Dublin, a street musician met a Czech immigrant girl.
He kept singing those memories for his ex-girlfriend. Because of her appreciation, he finally moved on and recorded a demo heading to London for his dream.
She couldn’t give up the love for piano although the burden of live was heavy. Because of his encouragement, she could be with her family wholeheartedly without regret.

However, not every encounter ends like a fairytale.

That’s okay.
Encounter with someone… Grow up… and… Remember it…
It’s all good.

ONCE: What does it feel like to be in love?

The Hill
by Markéta Irglová

Walking up the hill tonight and you have closed your eyes
I wish I didn't have to make those mistakes and be wise
Please try to be patient and know that I'm still learning
I'm sorry that you have to see the strength inside me burning

Where are you my angel now don't you see me crying?
And I know that you can't do it all but you can't say I'm not trying
I'm on my knees in front of him but he doesn't seem to see me
But all his troubles on his minds, he's looking right through me
And I'm letting myself down. beside you this fire in you
And I wish that you could see that half my troubles too

Looking at you sleeping, I'm with the man I love
I'm still here weeping while the hours pass so slow
And I know that in the morning I'll have to let you go
And you'll be just a man once I used to know
And for these past few days someone I don't recognize
This isn't all my fault, when will you realize

Looking at you leaving, I'm looking for a sign.
