It’s Never Too Late to Start a New Career

| Business, Education | No Comments

If you’ve spent a good portion of your life in a career field that you no longer find interesting, then you should change things up. It’s absolutely never too late to get a new career started. Spending time at a job you love can make all the difference in the world when it comes to your quality of life. Here are some reasons why starting a new career is a great choice regardless of what your age is.

You Have Experience

Many adults who are considering a career change late in life tend to not continue through with it because they believe that younger candidates will beat them for the position. The truth is that you have more experience than those who are fresh into the job market. Regardless of whether you’ve worked in one field or many, you have skills that you’ve learned along the way. That experience can pay off big time when it comes to comparing your resume to other candidates who don’t have much job experience.

You Challenge Yourself

After many years of doing the same thing, it can feel like the fun part of your life is over. The truth is that you’re just not challenging yourself anymore. When you apply for a new job, you challenge yourself to learn new skills. This can help to make you feel alive again. Don’t hesitate to challenge yourself. If you like driving, then apply for one of the many available CDL truck driver positions. If you like to cook, then apply to be a chef at a local restaurant. Learning the new skills required for a career change may require additional training or certification, but that can also be part of the fun. Trying something new is extremely rewarding when you follow through on your commitment.

You’ll Enjoy Life More

If you wake up every day dreading the job that you have, it’s time to switch. After just one day of a new job that you actually enjoy, you’ll notice a massive change in your quality of life. You’ll start to enjoy your life and you’ll notice that you have more fun throughout all areas of your life, not just work specifically. You’ll notice that your family life, your hobbies, and other areas of your life will steadily improve when you improve your work life.

Switching to a new career is not something that you should disregard no matter what age you are. We’re all capable of learning new skills and, even though we may not openly see it, we have gained skills through our many years of experience at our previous jobs. If you’re considering a career change late in life, the above are some of the most crucial reasons why you should go ahead with it today.

4 Helpful Tips For College Commuters

4 Helpful Tips For College Commuters

| Education | No Comments

I spent four years commuting to college. Each day I had classes, I drove 110 miles round-trip. When I entered college, I was a mother to one. When I graduated, I had two children. During this time, I took care of a household, as well as working part-time. The tips below helped me to graduate from college with a 3.7 grade point average, in spite of all the other things going on in my life.

Schedule Yourself a Day or Two Off

Rather than driving to school every day, schedule classes for only three or four days a week. This will reduce the amount of gas you have to purchase and will give you a much-needed break. I, personally, always found it easier to go to five or six classes back-to-back on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. I enjoyed having days off to write papers or do other activities. If you must schedule classes five days a week, make sure they are grouped together so you only have to go to school in the mornings or afternoons.

Arrive at School Early

Always leave your home at least fifteen minutes earlier than needed to arrive at your first class. Commuters can never anticipate what the traffic will be like. Professors do not appreciate students entering their classrooms late, so leaving early will ensure that you can reach your first class before it begins. Also, if you want to study, arrive even earlier or stay late. It is much easier to get quality study time in at the library on your college campus, rather than at home where you will have more distractions.

Take Advantage of Office Hours

Make a note of when each of your professors holds office hours. If they do not have hours that are convenient to your schedule, do not give up. Most professors are willing to work with commuting college students. If you would like to get together with a professor outside of their scheduled office hours, talk to him or her after class about the possibility of setting up a meeting that will work into your schedule.

Record Your Notes to a Small Tape Recorder

Invest some cash in a handheld tape recorder. When you begin to study your class notes, record yourself reading the notes. Reading the notes aloud will help you retain the information. Then, when you are driving to and from school, you can listen to your notes and get extra study time in. Listening to the notes will help you to remember the information. Using this study tip will ensure that your college commute is not just wasted time. Keep a tape or two for each subject. Rather than recording over the information after a test, leave all previous notes on the tape. When finals roll along, you will be one step ahead with your notes all together.

Comprehensive School Reform (CSR) and Student Achievement

Comprehensive School Reform (CSR) and Student Achievement

| News | No Comments

Increasing student achievement has been the benchmark of educators for centuries. The (CSR) Comprehensive School Reform initiative was developed to make sure that all children meet academic content and achievement standards as outlined by the Department of Education. The premise of the (CSR) is to address basic academics and to include parental involvement. In order for a school district to participate in the CSR, it must provide certain resources. These resources have been identified as crucial elements to continued success of the program.

Resources can present themselves in many manners. Resources may be physical as well as mental entities. For example, a baseball team has both physical and mental resources. The bats and balls are physical resources that can be bought or touched, while a player’s passion and positive attitude may be considered mental resources of a team. A successful baseball team requires both these physical and mental resources to perform at a competitive level.

The resources for a school district include both physical and mental items. Physical resources include books, computers, paper, pencils, bulletin boards, curriculum, transportation, staff, and community. Mental resources include teacher collaboration, teacher training, professional development, positive reinforcement, leadership, teamwork, and establishing realistic goals and objectives.

In order to facilitate an effective (CSR), there needs to be a healthy balance between the physical resources and the mental resources. For example, a school district can possess all the physical resources available yet if the faculty does not believe in the (CSR) it will not succeed. Justly, if a school district possesses all the mental resources (which most do already), but lack the physical resources, it will not succeed.

The school that I currently work at is South Junior High School, located in Brockton, Massachusetts. Brockton is the equivalent to Boston, and it is considered an inner-city school. Brockton’s test scores have been relatively low in minority population. Additionally, birth rates and dropouts have increased over the last five years. A new measure instituted by the present Republican governor, Mitt Romney, has required all potential high school graduates to pass a standardized test (MCAS). This standardized test is given to the student in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. If the student does not pass the exam before graduation, he/she will not receive a diploma. Instead, the student will receive a (COA) certificate of attendance.

Under a Republican governor, the state of Massachusetts has lost millions of educational funding. The hardest hit area has been after school enrichment programs. The Brockton School system has hired several new staff members whose only responsibility is to locate grants for local aid. The purpose of these grants is to provide the resources that were once available five years ago.

In my opinion I think it is difficult to provide these resources because the money is not there to support it. It is common acceptance that teachers do not earn the amount of money they deserve and most schools in America are not fully equipped with computers. Teachers at my school still live with their parents because it is too expensive to purchase a home on their salary. Additionally, teachers are required to achieve their Masters degree in education in order to receive state teaching licensure. Teachers have to pay for their education. In Brockton, the school system does not reimburse its teachers for tuition. Teachers do not have the time or motivation to possess the mental resources to initiate an effective (CSR). Teachers have more than one job and must go to these jobs right after school. Also, there is a clear distinction between new teachers and seasoned veterans. Seasoned veterans are scared of computers and refuse to use them. These same veteran teachers still calculate student averages on paper. Most new teachers use calculators or purchase computer software. New teachers possess more energy and motivation and still believe in the good of education. Many seasoned teachers have experienced “lay-offs” in the past and hold no loyalty to any school system. For them, teaching is a means to pay the mortgage until it is time to retire.

I think it is important for the principal to foster motivation. The principal is the coach of the team and it should be his/her responsibility to make sure all faculty members are on the same page. In order for (CSR) to be effective, the members of the team must believe in it’s worth and understand that the supportive resources will be made available.

Personally, I have never been a proponent of professional development when the school system requires it. The reason is because most teachers do not treat the professional development seriously. For them, they treat it as though they have the day off and would rather listen to lectures all day then stay at school. Professional development should be voluntary. It reminds me of the saying that “you can take a teacher to development, but you can’t force them to listen”. In many ways the teachers are as apathetic as the students they teach.

School reform requires resources. These resources are both mental and physical items. Both are equal in importance. Mental resource is having the drive and passion for change while physical resource is to have the funding and support. In order to increase student achievement the school must be part of the community and the community must be part of the school. Like my first analogy, the (CSR) is like a baseball team and the team must have all the resources to win. Of course, the real winner is the student. Most will assume the school district is the winner but we must remember that school superintendents are single persons with extensions of support (teachers, administrators, schools) and it is the children that are the future. In school reform we sometimes forget why we are initiating change in the first place.

Top 10 Arts Education Websites For Gifted Students

Top 10 Arts Education Websites For Gifted Students

| News | No Comments

Homeschooling a gifted child is like holding onto a runaway freight train. You spend so much time in your desperate attempt to hold on and keep up that finding enough stimulating and intriguing material is sometimes difficult. During the decision to homeschool my own gifted child, I spent months just finding websites to use. Gifted children get bored easily, so they need a constant supply of the fresh and interesting. In this list, I have compiled my top picks for arts education websites. So sit back and relax, the hard part has been done.

10. The Crayola website

To access the lesson plans click on the educators button located on the home page. There are hundreds of lesson plans encompassing grade levels K-12. Some of the lesson plans may not quite seem challenging enough, but there are plenty that are. Another plus, is that there are a number of lessons that incorporate art and another subject in one lesson. This is a great way to knock out two lessons and it adds extra stimulation. The plans involve art history, art techniques, art theory, and specific artist studies. On a scale of one to ten, I give it an 8.

9. Inside Art

This is a great interactive role playing website that teaches style and technique through the art of Van Gogh. It is a role playing game in which the student is trapped inside one of Van Gogh’s paintings and must work their way out. It is very fun and engaging. There is a good amount of challenge to the student, however, the site is limited. There are few pieces of artwork and while the gifted child would thoroughly enjoy this site would not be something that would be used more than a few times. However, it is excellent in the way that it engages the students brain and teaches the concepts of style and techniqe. On a a scale of 1 to 10, I give it an 8.

8. Art Tales: Telling Stories with Wildlife Art

This is another role play website in which students learn to use artwork to tell a story. This is a very good website to teach a single concept, however, it is short lived. Gifted students will not stay here long, but will get a good bit of value from it. One nice thing is that when the student finishes this, there are links to others similar that they can jump to themselves. On a scale of 1-10 I give it an 8.

7. ArtEdventures

This is a very good art history website. The best thing about this site is the comprehensive art history time line with dates and other moments in history that are corresponding. It also features architectural drawing lessons, as well as technique demonstrations and comprehensive artist studies. This is a good starting website for the child that is truly serious about art. It is somewhat limited in the amount of lessons that it features, but there are quite a few and they are top quality. On a scale of 1-10, I give it an 8.

6. Architect Studio 3D

This is a great website for the student interested in architecture. It is a one track website, being involved only with architecture, however. It is very comprehensive in this area with the history of architecture and Frank Lloyd Wright. When the student’s designs are complete they can be displayed in the design gallery and even receive critiques. On a scale of 1-10, I give it a 9.

5. A Brush with Wildlife: Create a Composition with Carl Rungius

Wow, private lessons in composition from one of the nation’s top wildlife artists. The best part is they don’t cost you anything! Mr. Rungius teaches the principles behind creating a composition. There is video instruction involved. Students create a composition online and then they are able to submit their work for a critique from the gallery. On a scale of 1-10, I give this site a 9.

4. Instructables

This is a great site for all those artists walking outside the box. These are lesson plans truly take a different and challenging approach to art. They are easy to follow and incorporate many interests, including electricity, magnetism and more. This is truly an innovative site with a new approach to art instruction. I think any gifted child would find these right up their alley. On a scale of 1-10, I give this site a 10.

3. The Artist’s Toolkit

This is a very comprehensive site in teaching the elements and principles of visual art. There are videos of artists at work and explaining what they are doing. It also features a glossary of techniques for the artist looking for something specific. Explanations are complete and very well explained. This is a site that every visual artist could use to improve their work. On a scale of 1-10, I give this site a 10

Hang On, it’s a bumpy ride!

Aceon Use In The Fight Against High Blood Pressure In College Students

Aceon Use In The Fight Against High Blood Pressure In College Students

| News | No Comments

High blood pressure is a leading cause of cardiovascular complications among college students. For many, the complications of high blood pressure are often misdiagnosed or under diagnosed. Suffering from anxiety, stress and improper diet, many college students often do not seek medical attention for the symptoms of high blood pressure until the complications are severe enough to debilitate their daily living activities.

In an effort to improve the high blood pressure of college students, college campuses are strongly urging students to engage in regular exercise, proper stress reduction techniques and consuming a healthy diet. When these measures do not prove effective, evaluation by a healthcare professional is usually indicated.

In the fight against high blood pressure in this young population, many healthcare professionals are turning to the use of Aceon, an ACE inhibitor. Manufactured and distributed by Solvay Pharmaceuticals, lends its success to control high blood pressure through the inhibition of the transformation of angiotensin I into angiotensin II.

As a college student suffering from high blood pressure, Aceon may provide the relief needed to restore blood pressure to a normal level while you focus on improving diet and exercise. With an aggressive approach, many college students can turnaround the negative effects of high blood pressure and remedy potential lifelong complications, ultimately discontinuing the use of Aceon.

As with any FDA approved drug, Aceon, in the treatment of high blood pressure, does not come without side effects. Most commonly, college students suffering from high blood pressure, using Aceon, will complain of symptoms such as lightheadedness, flu type symptoms, chest pain and, in some patients, a significant increase in weight gain. This last side effect, weight gain, is of significant concern as it is usually the weight gain, and improper diet that led to the onset of high blood pressure in the first place. For this reason, college students who begin the use of Aceon, to control high blood pressure, should consult a nutritionist on the college campus for advice on healthy eating.

For college students who are pregnant, suffering from high blood pressure, the use of Aceon is not indicated. As a category D drug, Aceon may cause birth defects in the fetus.

As if college life wasn’t hard enough, many college students, today, are suffering from increased incidences of high blood pressure. As a student with health complications, seeking the advice and guidance of a healthcare professional, including a nutritionist, is the first step in remedying the complications and, ultimately, restoring health. When suffering from high blood pressure, discuss the use of Aceon with your healthcare professional.

Tips to Writing Your Scholarship Essay

| Education | No Comments

When preparing your scholarship essay, you want to ensure that it is not only a good essay, but a great essay – one that truly allows your words to shine and put you in a position to win scholarship funds for school.

While many scholarships provide specific topics that they want you to address, others do not. You can find analytical essay topics online for topics that interest you for writing your scholarship essay. You will want to make sure you choose a topic that will enhance your opportunity of winning, so writing something that you are knowledgeable about will help you be more comfortable with your writing.

The most challenging portion of writing is actually getting started. Once you have a topic though, you can brainstorm your ideas and pick a few selections that you believe you are able to clarify within an essay.

  • You will want to share with your reader any specific goals that you have accomplished that have helped prepare you for college entry.
  • You will want to explain why you are applying for a scholarship and what these funds will mean to you as an opportunity.
  • You will also want to share if you have any hours in volunteering that will help show that you are involved in community service. Some scholarships are even available based solely on volunteerism, which is a great avenue for service.
  • You need to ensure that your scholarship essay is written in the present tense.
  • You want to really force the reader to be involved in what you are writing, as well as engaged. If they feel as though you are next to them, sharing with them a story, they are more compelled to be compassionate to you, your needs, and why you are applying to receive a scholarship.

You will want to make sure you give yourself enough time to prepare ideas by brainstorming, write your essay, and have time for rewriting. You might ask friends, family, or a trusted teacher for essay writing help or even just advice to keep you motivated. Surely, if you are writing one scholarship essay, seeking money for school, odds are you are writing more than one essay.

Stay focused

Allow yourself time to take breaks and rest from writing scholarship essays. Give your mind time to recharge, refuel, and come back refreshed to the process. This is especially important if you are writing multiple essays. You want to make sure your thoughts remain clear and you are able to express, as if for the first time, information about yourself.

Keep in mind, the reader has the question of why they should reward this scholarship money to you. This is the point of you writing the essay and a point that you need to answer. This should be the goal of your writing, since you are writing to acquire the scholarship funds. If your writing isn’t concise and doesn’t answer this question for the reader, you are not very likely to receive the scholarship. That is why it is important to stay focused and persevere towards the goal.

How to Prepare for an Essay Question on the Exam

| Education | No Comments

Writing an essay for a final exam is daunting for many students. As a word girl I never really understood that, but there it is. Most of the things that students fear can be overcome simply through an essay question preparation program. Literary ability is important, of course, but depending upon the subject for which you are writing the essay, the value varies; obviously, you will probably be expected to turn in a higher level of prose for a term paper on Shakespeare than on the scientific principles of gravity. By the time the exam arrives, you should already be familiar enough with the subject to at least fake your way through. If so, therein lies the nugget of success for accomplishing far more.

Start With Preparations Early

The best method available for passing an essay question on a final exam starts about a month before the exam date. Take notice of when this date will arrive and be prepared to sit down and take stock of what you have learned in the course. There are three important elements to this process. One, examine those things about the subject that you are confident about, the things that you know you know. Secondly, be honest with yourself about the material related to the topic that you know something about, but really should know better. Maybe it is because you missed a class or two, or you just never really successfully comprehended the concept. And finally, be brutally honest about what totally went over your head. Look at the material that has been covered and ask yourself is there anything in there that you just are totally baffled over. This shouldn’t be a quick assessment that you do while eating lunch or working on your Facebook page; take a few hours and go over your notes until you are completely sure about your strengths, your weaknesses and your utter failures.

How to Prepare for an Essay Question on the Exam

Notes Are Your Key To Success

While doing this, take notes. Give yourself at least a page for each of the three categories of knowledge. When you enter the information about the subject material you are iffy on, write it down clearly and pointedly. This is no time to be vague. If you know the exam question is going to have something to do with 17th century British authors and you know the name Jonathan Swift, but can’t remember whether he wrote Gulliver’s Travels or Moll Flanders, it won’t behove you to simply make the note “Jonathan Swift???” Instead, write down his name and his most famous work right next to each other.

If you don’t know the information when writing these notes down, then add another note on where you think you should go for the information. Let’s say you’re pretty sure there will be an essay question on the subject of Newtonian physics and you realize you can’t quite keep apple boy’s laws straight, add to your notes if this information was specifically addressed in your textbook, or whether a simple Google search will bring back sufficient information and, if so, what sites have proven reliable previously.

Keep Your Focus

After you have accomplished this, the next item on your agenda is to adapt your study schedule to allow more robust attention in the final weeks leading up to the exam and the dreaded essay question. Figure out where you can find an extra hour a day, or if necessary a bigger block of time on the weekends. If that means cutting back on parties, so be it. If it means simply giving up your hour of reruns of Seinfeld or Family Guy, so be it. (Obviously, you should not give up reruns of The Simpsons; your future is important, but come on!) Find a way to carve out at the very least an extra half-hour of study time a day and commit to filling in the blanks that information you kind of know, while at least getting up to speed on the information you totally tanked.

How to Prepare for an Essay Question on the Exam

Conclusion

This may sound like good advice to start a semester with, but it requires a lot of work and focus. The long weeks between getting a syllabus and getting an exam from your instructor allows for too many opportunities to get distracted and even overconfident. That last month before exams is long enough to stay focused; trying to change your habits a week or two before is just asking for trouble. Obviously, this only works if you know for certain there will be an essay question on the exam and it works most beautifully when you have one of those terrific-in my opinion-instructors who focuses on essay questions. Of course, with a little adjustment, you can even use this approach for non-essay exam questions like multiple choice or short answer. But when you’ve got to have a handle on both a conceptual overview as well as specific elements, this preparation method works better.

Can a Previous Addict Become An Addiction Counselor?

Can a Previous Addict Become An Addiction Counselor?

| Health News | No Comments

Addiction recovery offers incredible opportunities, but can a previous addict apply for counselor certification? In most cases, recovering addicts can indeed apply for an addiction counseling solution. In fact, many possess the high degree of empathy needed for the position.

Can a Previous Addict Become An Addiction Counselor?

Becoming a Certified Addiction Counselor

In most states, a previous addict may become a certified addiction counselor. They must, however, be completely free of drug use for a long period. Addiction counseling, primarily, is about trust. If a counselor can’t sustain their own health and wellbeing, they’ll fail to provide adequate support.

Counselors currently in recovery, of course, must totally separate themselves from former addictions to be safe and effective. Often, it’s difficult for a counselor to treat recovering addicts if their taught techniques failed on themselves.

The Importance of Customized Treatment Plans

Certified addiction counselor training touts the benefits of customized treatment plans, wherein an addiction counselor molds a treatment schedule around the patient. If a counselor has experienced addiction themselves, they may find it useful to implement time-tested-and-true recovery tactics in their practices. A certified addiction professional certainly has leeway when creating a program, and they aren’t restricted from using life experiences as guiding discussion tools.

By imposing useful techniques, a counselor can become more effective. Personal experience may indeed be conducive to another’s recovery, but overindulgence in an addictive past may be detrimental to a patient’s recovery. A certified addiction professional must always put the patient first, pursuing a fulfilling, ever-growing career path.

Are Ex-Addicts Better Counselors?

While previously addicted individuals may relay useful insights, no evidence supports their superiority in the addiction counseling world. That said, an ex-addict’s ability to mold a session’s discussion around their own anecdotes is unique.

In any case, becoming an addiction counselor is difficult. It requires years of education via either online or in-person education. It also requires a significant amount of work experience. Often a high-paying career, addiction counseling is justifiably tough to get into. A certified addiction counselor’s work is never done—nor is their learning.

Where Can You Start?

If you’re a recovering addict, you can still impact the lives of others positively. Online addiction counseling coursework is available, and it’s a viable avenue for those intending to become addiction counselors. Your life plan deserves a strong foundation, and today’s digital learning paths are incredibly effective.

Recovery itself is difficult, but it’s highly rewarding. In many cases, an ex-addict’s completed addiction counseling coursework can serve as repeat therapy. By learning more about addiction, an ex-addict can further reduce the chance of relapse while creating healthy, loving environments. It’s important to continue education at any level, and it’s similarly important to serve the lives of others.

On Education

Learning is difficult—both for “clean” individuals and ex-addicts. For this reason, an ex-addict should be greatly recovered before tackling coursework. Both post-acute withdrawal syndrome and long-term recovery difficulties can impede the learning process.

Education is, however, never locked from an individual. If you’ve received treatment yourself, there’s still hope. You can settle the score with your addiction, assisting the lives of others while preventing relapse. Your life is in your hands, and it’s certainly useful to others who struggle. As a future professional, it’s your responsibility to make yourself as capable as possible.

Discuss options with your learning provider, consider online courses and discover your own potential. The road to becoming an addiction counselor is a long one, but it needn’t be barred from those who’ve struggled with addiction. In some ways, the experience of addiction is a powerful learning tool. In any case, education is needed to enrich the lives of others.

They will be pleased to have a popular person in their circle, and you will be more likely to spend your time working rather than having fun.

Should You Go For A Graduate Degree?

| Education | No Comments

For certain jobs, attending a graduate school is a minimum requirement. For others, a graduate degree can help us advance in our career. In many cases, however, young professionals are left to wonder if a graduate degree would pay off.

This is a big decision that can potentially affect a person’s life for better or worse. There is a time commitment and a large fund involved. So how do you decide if it is the right move to go back to school? Here are some factors to consider:

The Value of the Degree

There was a time when a bachelor degree is sufficient for most jobs. Things have changed, however. In the current job market, many jobs require a higher degree just to get your foot in the door. A graduate degree, in this case, can up your chance of securing a job position.

Aside from getting the qualification, a graduate degree can also offer other benefits. It’s a great way to meet and network with other professionals in your field. Many graduate students return to school after being in the workforce for a while. So you will be in touch with others who are already working in your professional industry.

In certain professions, however, the degree is not valued as much as working experience. For examples, many people start out as a sales associate and move up to senior position without a higher degree. What they have is an extensive network and proven track record. In this case, having a higher degree may not be as much of a career boost.

The Cost

Let’s face it, a graduate degree is expensive. Here is a sobering fact: Our of 10 students graduating in 2013, 7 of them have student debt. If you haven’t paid off student loan from your undergraduate day, going for a graduate degree can be a far-fetched dream.

Therefore, consider all your financing options and other big budgets in your life before making the plunge. Is it a good time to stray away from your workforce? Will the student loan be another burden on top of your mortgage payment or car loan?

The Commitment

Once you decide that the degree will worth the cost, be sure to also consider the commitment that it will require.

When you were 17, attending college is a natural step. Studying is your second nature and you are less distracted with other things in life. A few years later, the decision to go back to school may not be the easiest. Many students only put in enough time and effort just to get by, but by doing so, they are not making the most of their degree.

Graduate courses are demanding, and it can be tough going to school part time. If you are going through a tough period, perhaps put the plan on hold. Otherwise, be sure to commit yourself to a challenging but rewarding experience ahead.
