Law entrance examinations

Law or legal education in India has primarily one objective, i.e. to enable students become practicing lawyers after going through extensive legal research, education and training at nationally recognised law schools in India. The Legum Baccalaureus (LLB) is the most common law degree offered by Indian law universities. There are integrated degrees as well such as B.A. LLB, BSc LLB, etc. LLM is the post graduate law degree in India which is of one/two years. However, in 2014, UGC ordered Indian law institutes to replace one-year LLM degree and the five-year integrated LLB degree to with a mandatory two-year LLM and an LLB of six years, respectively. Entry to the most renowned law colleges requires law aspirants to score high in common entrance tests that are listed below:

• Common Law Admission Test (CLAT)

This exam is a centralised test, which is taken after the 12th grade for admission to integrated undergraduate law programmes in National Law Universities (NLU) in India and also for admission in Master of Laws programmes after Graduation in Law. The participating NLUs include those located in major cities such as Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Jodhpur, Patna, Lucknow, etc.

• Law School Admission Test (LSAT)

This exam is administered by the U.S.-based Law School Admission Council (LSAC), which has been designed to assess law aspirants’ reading comprehension, verbal reasoning and logical proficiencies. The LSAT scores are used by prominent institutions such as School of Law of IIT Kharagpur, Jindal Global Law School and UPES for selecting candidates for admission to 3-year Bachelor of Law (LLB), 5-year Integrated BA LL.B and LLM programmes.

In traditional law universities in the country, the admission is based on the admission test to the constituent law college and a common admission test score is used for admission to its affiliated colleges.

• University of Delhi Law Entrance Exam

Delhi University Faculty of Law conducts University of Delhi Law Entrance Test for admission to the LLB and LLM courses while All India Law Entrance Test (AILET) is conducted for admission to NLU, Delhi exclusively. DU offers various other legal programmes other than LLB and LLM such as PhD, Doctor of Civil Law (DCL) and Master of Comparative Law (MCL).

• Symbiosis Entrance Test (SET)

The SET common test is conducted by the Symbiosis Law School for admission to its undergraduate law programmes – BA LLB & BBA LLB. To appear in SET exam, students must have passed 10+2 examination from recognized board. They also need to appear in group discussion and personal interview after clearing SET exam.

Some of the other important law entrance exams in India are: All India Bar Exam, Amity Law School, Government Law College Mumbai exam for admission to best law colleges in Mumbai, Indian Law Society Pune exam and Qualified Lawyers Transfer Test.
