What You Are Required to Bring to Your Examination

While the physical exam will not take long to perform, it is necessary that you bring with you your full medical history with you. For this reason, you should spend some time before your exam to gather the following:

  • A list of every vaccination you have received thus far.
  • If any of your family members are immigrating as well who have a learning disability or mental retardation, please bring a report of their condition, as well as any special supervision or education requirements they may have.
  • If you’ve ever tested positive for tuberculosis (TB), you will need to bring with you the certificate from your doctor giving the circumstances of the positive test result, which should also indicate any treatment that was prescribed and how long it lasted. This certificate needs to be signed by your doctor, proving you were adequately treated, and include dates and types of medications prescribed. If you have ever had an abnormal chest X-ray, bring a copy of that X-ray with you to the exam.
  • If you have ever been diagnosed with syphilis, you are required to bring a signed certificate from your doctor proving you were adequately treated. If, in the past, you had a positive VDRL or other blood test for syphilis, but were not treated, you must bring a written explanation signed your doctor.
  • If you have a history of violent or harmful behavior that has resulted in injury to people, animals, and / or property or inanimate objects, you will need to let the examiner know, who will determine whether the behavior was related to a medical or psychiatric problem, or to drug or alcohol use. To be clear, harmful behavior includes self-harm – no matter how minor in nature – and attempted suicide.
  • If you have ever been treated or hospitalized for mental illness or drug or alcohol abuse, you will need to bring written certification including the diagnosis, length of treatment, and your prognosis.
  • If you are currently being treated for a chronic medical condition or taking prescription medication(s) on a regular basis, you will need to fully explain your condition(s) as well as give a full list of the names of the medications being taken. Preparing this list in advance of your examination will save time and ensure you give an accurate and full accounting.

What the Examination Will Entail

At the beginning of your immigration medical examination, the doctor will speak with you and review your medical and vaccination history. Once this part has been completed, you will be given a standard physical, and the physician will examine, at a minimum, your eyes, ears, nose and throat, extremities, heart, lungs, abdomen, lymph nodes, skin, and external genitalia. The exam will also include and chest X-ray and blood test. Children under the age of 15 will usually not be given the X-ray or blood tests.

Pregnant women may ask that the X-ray be postponed, however, whether or not this request will be granted is dependent on the country they are immigrating from. This is due to the fact that different U.S. consulates are currently following different guidelines on this matter.

The doctor will also give you any vaccinations that you are lacking, based on a list of required vaccinations. These include:

  • Hepatitis A and B
  • Influenza
  • Influenza type b (Hib)
  • Measles
  • Meningococcal
  • Mumps
  • Pneumococcal
  • Pertussis
  • Polio
  • Rotavirus
  • Rubella
  • Tetanus and diphtheria toxoids
  • Varicella
